Cricetus v1.0 Overview

Cricetus is a PHP application to search for matching strings in log files.
It was mainly designed for usage in a syslog server environment with big log
files, where you cannot log to databases due to the size, but to plain text
files which will be searched.

This software was created since other sourceforge projects like phpsyslog-ng
(which is logging to a MySQL database) were not performing at an ISP with
just a big volume of daily logs.

The software offers two modes: a simple "grep", displaying search results in
a plain text mode, and the "DB grep", which means: Do a quick "grep" over the
plain text log file, parse the results and store them in a temporary database
table, so you can quickly filter logs with specifiy facility, priority etc.

The application is user based/authenticated. You can define a base directory
for each user, defining which log files he will see. Additionally, you can
create a "log template" which you can adapt to your syslog(ng) configuration,
to get things matched. Nevertheless, if you don't want to use this, you can
just use cricetus as a "graphical" plain text grep tool.

Since it is user based, you can manage which staff people may have reading
access to which log files. This tool is now in use for several years here,
and is appreciated by many users who use it daily, so I decided to finally
make it public at sourceforge.

Cricetus requires a PHP capable web server with MySQL support. On the client
side, JavaScript must be supported.
